Wednesday Jan 21, 2009

We are trying to get a used car and I cant find anywhere that will give me a history report on the car without having to freaking buy it.

Anywhere I can go, or call so that i can get this information without burning my wallet?

Absolutely!

You're Crazy to Buy any Used Car Without a Car History Report!

I met this guy down at the local watrering hole where I play pool and when he heard that I buy and sell cars for a living, he said that he was an "expert" at inspecting cars and would be happy to provide his services for a reasonable fee. I told him that I was grateful for the offer, but that I didn't really need any help in that department.

He kept after me so I finally agreed to let him tag along to my next auction. Not as a paid consultant, but as an observer.

When the day arrived, we got an early start and he immediately started "evaluating" the cars. All serious buyers know what to look for when evaluating the condition of a car and they do it quickly and quietly and professionally.

Mr. Expert, however, took great pride in loudly annoucing every "flaw" he could see. Even though he was wrong with his assessments about half the time, I was glad to let him mouth off and scare the rookies away. None of the regular buyers were paying any attention to him at all.

Then we came on this very sweet little 59 corvette. This thing looked like a cream puff. It looked like it had never been out of the garage.

But when I ran it through Vehix, it came back as having had 20 owners and had been declared salvage at one point. It wasn't even clear who the current title holder really was.

But Mr. Expert didn't bother to do a car history report. He has his "years of experience" that told him everything he needed to know.

I mentioned that the car had been salvaged from an insurance total about three years ago.

"I can see that," he said. "It was all body work damage, the frame is straight and that's all that matters. This is a good car."

Sure enough, when the car came up, none of the professionals made a single bid. It was rookie heaven and they all had auction fever, especially Mr. Expert. He ended up paying $60K - basically a retail price and certainly not any sort of "deal."

He was proud however and I didn't say anything. No reason to rain on the guy's parade.

A couple of weeks later, I saw him shooting pool and I asked him how he was enjoying that sweet little ride.

"Oh, umm, well, those freakin cops didn't clear the title before they sold the damn car! About a week after I got the car home, some cops show up with a court order saying some guy I never heard of was the legal title owner and he was claiming his property!"

"Wow" I said in mock amazement.

"The didn't want to hear that I had bought it at a police auction. They claimed it didn't matter and that I was out the money and tough shit. Then they drove off in my corvette."

I didn't see the need to point out that it had never really been his corvette and that he would be sixty grand richer if he had simply run a vehicle report before the auction.

Our car was repossessed. If we pay fees and get it back, do we still end up with a repo hit on our credit?

Friday Mar 5, 2010
Thomas F asked:

The bank has said we can get our car back if we can scrape together two months of payments due. But, since the car was repo'd a few nights ago, is it to late to save a repo report going on our credit history? Is it reported only if the car is, in fact, sold at auction or otherwise disposed of?

Are there any army discounts for car loans/ refinancing an existing car loan?

Friday Mar 5, 2010
sgreger1 asked:

I have an 06 RSX that I bought with a 625 credit score and pay like 500 a month w/ 9-11% interest I think. When I bought it I had 3,000 in credit card debt and had only had a credit history of 2 years. Now that I am 21 and have 3 years of credit history, and have paid off all my debt down to 0, plus made payments on this car for 1 year, I was planning on refinancing the car this year. I am doing this mainly so I can afford the car when I am in the army this year, however I was wondering if the army can provide any discount (like a credit union) for re-financing if I sign an allotment or something so the creditor is sure they will get their money.

Anyone have any info on this?
@ Kathy

I know how a credit union works and I believe my credit is at something like 710, but I know the army has a lot of discount worked out with various institutions and I was wondering if being the army would help lend me credit for something like a refi. Obviousely I would only be doing this once I have been in for at least 6 months.

How to go with minor body work for a new Honda?

Thursday Mar 4, 2010
hariLive asked:

I own a 06 Honda Accord and was hit by fellow passenger in the parking lot. There was a minor paint damage at the rear bumper. Fellow passenger mentioned that he would pay what ever the amount it takes. I already inquired in Honda showroom and got a quote for minor body work. Is the body work from Honda showroom reliable. Any pointers on how to go about this without affecting car history, carfax, insurance etc? The bad thing is that this is not even my fault

Thanks for your time

What are your reviews for Geico and Progressive?

vikasintl asked:

We have Amica insurance and they cost $1200 a year and our car is Saturn ION 2 2004 sedan.
This is financed car so we need full coverage.
With clean driving history and clean car history do you think this is a good price?
Should we try other companies to compare?

How much time does “insufficient credit history” usually imply?

Wednesday Mar 3, 2010
JAM asked:

So, I've had my credit card (had a secured one, no i have an unsecured one) for over a year now. Also, I have a car loan that's about 8 months old. I recently applied for a new credit card and was declined because of "insufficient credit history". I was wondering how much time is still deemed as "insufficient". Is it 4 years? 5? 10?

I was denied to buy a new car with a work visa?

Tuesday Mar 2, 2010
JKZ asked:

I have a working visa and a social security. My brother co-signed for me. Credit history was not a problem but I was denied until I am able to obtain my permanent residency. Is this true? So- does this mean I have to wait for 3 years until my green card has been approved? Does this applies to all dealers? This is one of the famous Japanese cars---and best selling cars in the US.
I asked if I can buy a preowned car and payable in 3 years if they're scared of me going home after 3 years- but they still can't approve with a work visa status only...

Thanks a million
Thank you so much for some of you who gave me an insight on what to do. My brother thought about personal loan and credit union but both have high interest. I will try to visit other dealers and see how will they take it new or preowned. Thank you.

Can my wife and I qualify for an FHA loan with her good credit and my poor credit history?

Saturday Feb 27, 2010
Pat asked:

Our combine gross income is $120K (I make 70K). Student loan/car loans amount to about 45K total right now ($750/monthly). Her score is in the low 700's, mine unfortunately is on the upper 500's. I just recently paid off all outstanding debts on my credit report. Can we get a good loan?
