I have this elderly friend whose kids and grandkids require her financial help. She feels she has to buy cars for them to drive because, according to them, they can't own cars without losing social service benefits. Then she adds these cars to her insurance policy and gives them to these people to drive. She's in a huge financial bind, and I'm worried she's going to get into legal trouble on top of her financial problems. She can't afford to insure the people driving the cars because of their driving records and credit history. Is this legal? Insuring the vehicles without insuring the drivers? I know when my kids became driving age, I was required to add them to the policy or exclude them as drivers. But these are adults in their 20s and 40s that are driving cars registered to her and insured for her.

As long as she is the title holder of these cars of course she can insure them but I would suggest that she checks the policy fine print . because it may restrict family members unless residing with her .. it may require a separate carrier , also if one of them gets into a serious wreck and injure someone she will be held liable.
But having said that .. as long as they have her permission to drive the insurance company can’t do much about it …
Poor woman .. these kids are using her and they don’t even care .. Someone needs to talk with her does she have any other family that don’t take advantage of her ? maybe they should be let in on whats going on .. You yourself could contact the company and remain anonymous but let them know whats happening but then these kids would still probably drive with out it then she would really be in trouble.. I would contact an agency or find out who in your area looks after this type of thing because there are laws to protect the elderly even if she can’t see she is being abused ..
I wish you luck and it’s a good thing she has a Friend like you to be concerned for her welfare ..
make it your mission ..

It is called insurance fraud…can cause serious legal and financial issues. This unethical practice causes problems for the rest of us citizens, who pay their own way and are responsible for their own actions. There is also another name for this practice …” enabling”. An insurance company will investigate all claims and deny coverage if a situation as you described exists. If someone is injured or dead due to this enabling… a moral load is placed on the enabler… Grrr..!!!

Well no its not legal- but it happens all the time. The only thing that will happen is that in an event of a claim when these people that arent properly insured are driving- the insurance company could and will deny the claim and cancel her insurance.
